Toward a Comprehensive Strategy for Nanotechnology Risk Communication
(Web Page on Another Site)
In order to avoid the stifling political contention that can arise from ineffective communication about technological risk, a series of studies were conducted by the Cultural Cognition Project (CCP) at Yale Law School and the Projection on Emerging Nanotechnologies (PEN) at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. This paper briefly summarizes the theory behind and results of three sets of research studies. It then proposes a series of recommendations for nanotechnology based on these studies.

The International Risk Governance Council (IRGC) is an independent organization that aims to help improve the understanding and management of potentially global risks that have impacts on human health and safety, the environment, the economy and society at large. As part of a Phase 1 project on emerging risks they have assembled a number of case studies and illustrations including a case on large-scale engineered systems.

Improving the Management of Emerging Risks: Risks from new technologies, system interactions and unforeseen or changing circumstances
(Web Page on Another Site)
This paper is part of a project at the council on Emerging Risks. It focuses on the management of emerging risks in technology and industry in three categories: risks with uncertain impacts, with uncertainty resulting from advancing science and technological innovation; risks with systemic impacts, stemming from technological systems with multiple interactions and systemic dependencies; and risks with unexpected impacts, where new risks emerge from the use of established technologies in evolving environments or contexts.

New Technologies: Have We Learned Anything Yet About Risks?
(Web Page on Another Site)
On December 15th, 2011 the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars hosted a discussion on Generic Lessons Learned about "Societal Responses to Emerging Technologies Perceived as Involving Risks," a paper by Paul Stern, Thomas Wilbanks, Susan Cozzens, and Eugene Rosa. Links to the paper and to Mr. Stern's Power Point presentation are available on the Wilson Center website.
