Boeing, Volkswagen, Theranos. Every day you can read about a new corporate scandal in the news. You might read this like you watch a Hollywood movie: For entertainment, because you are convinced that it has nothing do to with you. However, if you look deeper into those scandals, you find that those responsible are normal and decent managers. Your company could be the next. I spent almost two decades analyzing large scandals, wondering whether there would be something like a repeating pattern, the same things going wrong again and again, spreading from company to company, from industry to industry. And yes, there is such a pattern that pushes companies over the moral cliff. I call it the DARK PATTERN. In my talk I will present the pattern along some of the most iconic corporate scandals, summarizing what my colleague Ulrich Hoffrage and I describe in our forthcoming book: The Dark Pattern. Hidden Dynamics of Corporate Scandals. Public Affairs (June 2025).
