Challenges and Opportunities in Using Residual Newborn Screening Samples for Translational Research: Workshop Summary (2010)
Newborn screening samples are used to test more than 4 million infants each year for life-threatening diseases that are treatable if found at birth. These specimens also represent a potentially invaluable resource for public health and biomedical research. The IOM held a workshop to examine issues surrounding the use of residual specimens for translational research.

Chimpanzees in Biomedical and Behavioral Research (2011)
A report looking at the scientific necessity of using chimpanzees in research, and well as potential alternatives to their use.

Conducting Biosocial Surveys: Collecting, Storing, Accessing, and Protecting Biospecimens and Biodata (2010)
A report that discusses ethical issues raised by the collection and use of biospecimens by social scientists.

Conflict of Interest and Medical Innovation: Ensuring Integrity While Facilitating Innovation in Medical Research (2014)
This is the summary of a workshop convened by the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Translating Genomic-Based Research for Health in June 2013 to explore the appropriate balance between identifying and managing conflicts of interest and advancing medical innovation.

Conflict of Interest in Medical Research, Education, and Practice (2009)
This report provides a comprehensive look at conflict of interest in medicine. It offers principles to inform the design of policies to identify, limit, and manage conflicts of interest without damaging constructive collaboration with industry.

Data Matters – Ethics, Data, and International Research Collaboration in a Changing World: Proceedings of a Workshop (2018)
This report explores, through an ethical lens, the changing opportunities and risks associated with data management and use across disciplinary domains—all within the context of international research agreements.

Developing Capacities for Teaching Responsible Science in the MENA Region: Refashioning Scientific Dialogue (2013)
This report describes efforts to address dual use issues by developing institutes around the world that will help life sciences faculty learn to teach about the responsible conduct of science. Based on the successful National Academies Summer Institute for Undergraduate Biology Education and on previous NRC reports on effective methods for teaching about dual use issues, the report's authoring committee designed a general framework for the faculty institutes and chose the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region to test a prototype faculty institute.

Doing Global Science: A Guide to Responsible Conduct in the Global Research Enterprise (2016)
This concise introductory guide explains the values that should inform the responsible conduct of scientific research in today's global setting. An excellent choice for background reading for a research ethics course.

Education and Training in the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals: A Guide for Developing Institutional Programs (1991)
The volume provides content information for required topics--from ethics to record keeping--and lists sources of additional publications, audiovisual programs, and computerized teaching aids.

Ensuring the Integrity, Accessibility, and Stewardship of Research Data in the Digital Age (2009)

Ethical Considerations for Research Involving Prisoners (2007)
Because prisoners face restrictions on liberty and autonomy, have limited privacy, and often receive inadequate health care, they require specific protections when involved in research, particularly in today's correctional settings. This report reviews the ethical considerations regarding research involving prisoners.

Ethical Review and Oversight Issues in Research Involving Standard of Care Interventions - - workshop in brief (2015)
On December 2-3, 2014, the Institute of Medicine's Board on Health Sciences Policy held a workshop to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders about the ethical issues surrounding study design and informed consent for regulated research studies involving standard of care interventions. This brief summary of the workshop provides highlights from the presentations and discussions.

Ethics Education and Scientific and Engineering Research: What's Been Learned? What Should Be Done? Summary of a Workshop (2009)
The workshop, summarized in this volume, discussed the social environment of science and engineering education; the need for ethics education for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in science and engineering; models for effective programs; and assessment of approaches to ethics education, among other topics.
