Challenges and Opportunities in Using Residual Newborn Screening Samples for Translational Research: Workshop Summary (2010)
Newborn screening samples are used to test more than 4 million infants each year for life-threatening diseases that are treatable if found at birth. These specimens also represent a potentially invaluable resource for public health and biomedical research. The IOM held a workshop to examine issues surrounding the use of residual specimens for translational research.

Developing Capacities for Teaching Responsible Science in the MENA Region: Refashioning Scientific Dialogue (2013)
This report describes efforts to address dual use issues by developing institutes around the world that will help life sciences faculty learn to teach about the responsible conduct of science. Based on the successful National Academies Summer Institute for Undergraduate Biology Education and on previous NRC reports on effective methods for teaching about dual use issues, the report's authoring committee designed a general framework for the faculty institutes and chose the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region to test a prototype faculty institute.

Because prisoners face restrictions on liberty and autonomy, have limited privacy, and often receive inadequate health care, they require specific protections when involved in research, particularly in today's correctional settings. This report reviews the ethical considerations regarding research involving prisoners. 

Ethical Review and Oversight Issues in Research Involving Standard of Care Interventions - - workshop in brief (2015)
On December 2-3, 2014, the Institute of Medicine's Board on Health Sciences Policy held a workshop to facilitate dialogue among stakeholders about the ethical issues surrounding study design and informed consent for regulated research studies involving standard of care interventions.
