MIT comments on dismissal of wire fraud case against MIT student David LaMacchia
An official statement from MIT officials regarding the decision by a district court judge to throw out the government's case against LaMacchia.
MIT spokesman Kenneth D. Campbell issued the following comment on the decision today of the U.S. District Court in Boston: The judge determined that the national wire fraud statute didn't cover this case. There has been no MIT disciplinary action against David LaMacchia pending the ultimate resolution of the case in court. The US Attorney's office has 30 days to consider an appeal.
Once it is resolved in law, MIT disciplinary action will be considered to determine whether LaMacchia's actions violated internal MIT regulations regarding computer usage.
